It shouldn't need saying that the baby play yard must not have any pointy edges. This may be checked not only at the time of purchasing the play pen, but also at regular intervals, once your baby starts using it.
You'll also have to make regular checks of the baby play yard's mesh side panel walls. Make sure that the mesh stays clear from any holes. These can frequently be due to damage from a toy or even a determined pair of inquisitive hands.
If any such damage does occur, fix it right away, or if necessary get it replaced. If you do not, baby could be drawn to the damaged area and he'll work at it till he is able to get stuck in the hole.
